Encore!Who are they and what should I do?

I got my first letter from an outfit called Encore Receivable Management Inc.It's for a Discover chargeoff from May 2004 for 17k.Their letter lists Discover as the creditor and they say my account has been "referred to our office for collection of the gbalance in full".They go on to say that unless I notify them in 30 days that I dispute the validity of the debt,they will assume the debt is valid.They left a voice mail with my boss at work the other day trying to get proof of my employment but my boss talked to me and didn't call them back.What should I do?Anyone have experience with these guys?
