Unless I am mistaken, an indefinite continuance isn't exactly indefinate. Eventually the court will clear its docket by holding a "status" hearing, usually after six months to a year. If neither plaintiff or defendant shows up, it will be dismissed for "lack of prosecution." If the plaintiff doesn't show up, but the defendant does, the defendant can move to dismiss with prejudice.
