If you cannot find an attorney, follow Why Chat's instructions on how to answer an expired Statute of Limitations (SOL) lawsuit. You'll find a link to Why Chat's site in the "Newcomers" post near the bottom of the threads on this page.

They can't garnish your wages unless they get a judgment against you. If you have received a summons, then it seems unlikely there was ever a judgment. You need to show up so that they don't get a judgment by default.

If you follow Why Chat's instructions to the letter, you should be ok. The seven years you mentioned is the reporting period for them entering the debt into your credit report. The LEGAL SOL (the amount of time they have to file suit and collect) is based on your state laws. Why Chat's site has much information on where to find those laws.

Good luck! I followed the instructions on an expired debt and won, so it can be done.
