Are you sure he refered to himself as a detective with the Sheriff's dept? It could be different in NJ I guess, but in Mo, where my husband's cousin is an under sheriff, it is sheriff, under sheriff, and deputy, no detectives. The under sheriff has the duties of a detective, but only the police have detectives.
