Unfair billing practice....please respond

In the beginning of January of 2000, I made online purchases with my credit card from the buy.com web site. In doing so, I gave them a valid credit card number to be charged the full amount for the transaction. For every charge I make, I am very prompt at paying the full balance of my credit card bill in a timely manner.

I had no reason to assume anything other than that my debt was paid in full and charged to my account. I now have a billing statement that says something to the contrary. Apparently something about the purchase has led the buy.com company to claim that the bill was never paid. The email sent to me is dated June 6, 2001, which is well over a year since the transaction.

When I give out my credit card information in good faith and expect to be billed in a timely manner, am I obligated to pay for a billing error that occurred well over a year ago?

I'm an honest consumer and expect to pay my debts, but this seems highly unfair to have such a bomb dropped on me after so much time has passed. My credit card transaction was on a valid credit card. I believe that providing my credit card information and billing authorization was completion of my obligations.
