Bank took money out of my checking account-Please help

My girlfriend wrote a $2000 check (#200)in March. I deposited it in my checking account and the check was cleared a few days later. At the end of March, our monthly statements confirmed that the transaction was done. In late May, my bank tried to cash the same check # again with a copied check stated that the original check was lost. My girlfriend bank rejected and returned the check stated that the check was cashed in March. This is my problem. My bank took $2000 out of my checking account. They said that my girlfriend bank didn't pay for check #200. I am trying to work with my bank to get my $2000 back without success. Please advice on what to do next? Thanks
