Gulf State Credit - What's the worst they can do?

I have an old credit card debt from Citibank that was sold to Gulf State in 10/99 for $3,000. They threatened with legal action unless I pay. Does anyone know what's the worst they can do to me, I don't care about my credit anymore but what would a judgment mean? I live in Illinois and am particularly interested in similar experiences with Gulf State (i.e do they really follow through on their threats?). Any advise is welcomed. Thanks.
