First of all, relax.

They *want* you to get upset, frightened, and intimidated. Their main tool for collecting is the debtor's own fear and confusion.

If you don't like their screaming and yelling, then don't listen to it. If you don't like their arguing, then don't argue with them. Either screen all of your calls with an answering machine or voice mail, or just hang up every time the collectors call. If they call repeatedly within a few minutes, then take the phone off the hook for awhile.

The reason why these collectors are harassing you so vigorously is because they "smell blood." They can tell that you are intimidated, so they see a chance to convince you to pay up out of fear. If you calm down, you will discourage them.

It definitely sounds like these collectors are violoating the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. You can learn more about the FDCPA, and handling collection agencies at the link below...
