How quickly can a account be charged off

I have been paying a corporate charge card regularly, since I left the company, however the complete amount has not been paid yet. After 4 months of such regular payments, the debt was charged off...Can a creditor do that, even if you pay them regularly. The creditor is now refusing to remove the item from my credit report. What can I do?
