I also had the same problem with a debt that was verified at equifax. Even with a letter. My request was denied twice. Finally I called someone and gave the number on top the letter sent. Always save those letters. I referred to both letters that said the debt was valid and also referred to my letter saying it was not. Since I had already sent in a copy of the letter, they looked at the case files and deleted it from my record.

Make sure you send them a copy of that letter. Then call to follow up after a week to make sure they have received it. Then go over the entire case with your case numbers and letter numbers.
