Also every state has an attorney general and a department for collection agencies only. If you contact that agency they can give you all the rules regarding collection agencies in your state and what credit reporting agencies must do for you.

That's if it turns out to be a collection agency, it's the only way I could have an account deleted from my record, by mailing a copy of the rules for my state to Experian explaining the rules for collection agencies in Florida and how the account I was disputing was violating them. Those rules can be very valuable. Most attorney general's are online. Check your state's government webpages.
