I had a service from a hospital E.R. on 2/1/01 for $547.00 which my insurance co. didn't cover. After receiving the bill from the hospital in April, I called them and made a payment arrangement for $100 per month starting in May. I sent in the payment to the address shown on the payment stub, but they never recieved it and the check was never cashed. After speaking to the business office, I was informed that the hospital had changed ownership and that I should wait to see if the check would be cashed within the next couple of days. A few days later, I received a letter from a collection agency demanding payment in full. When I called them, they offered to make a payment arrangement, but with no guarantee that this would not appear as a collection on my credit report. I was told that they are a collection agency from the hospital and they would not report this to any of the credit reporting agencies. However, when I asked them to put that in writing, they refused. What should I do? I want to pay the bill, but am afraid that they WILL put this on my credit report. By the way, the check was never cashed and I am going to stop payment on it (maybe it was lost in the mail or the hospital lost it---who knows?) Please advise me as I don't know what to do!!
