insisting Postdated checks

Hi,
When my fiance' and I met, he was in debt for his truck payment, which had been referred to a collection agency. Over two years ago, I called them (with his permission) and set up a payment plan. Since he did not have a checking account, we would deposit his paychecks in my account and I would make a payment out of my checking account.
For two years, we have made a full monthly payment. I'm not saying they were all on time, but we never missed a payment.
Now, because our payments have been late (not missed) the collection agency is pushing me to give them a postdated check out of my account for them to draw on for the next six months. If I don't, they will "discontinue our monthly payment option."
I'm uncomfortable with this. Do I have to do this?
