The BBB is a business. It makes money by collecting membership fees from businesses. If a company pays the BBB enough money, they will get a satisfactory rating. If consumers complain about a buisness that is not a member of the BBB, the first thing the BBB does is contact the business and try to get them to pay a membership fee. Whether they pay or not is a strong influence on the BBB's response to the consumer complaint.

The only use the BBB has to consumers is if the BBB says a company is bad, it's *really* bad. They aren't going to make a negative report about a company unless there is already considerable evidence in the public domain to justify it. Otherwise the BBB might get sued.

Any company promoting "debt settlement," "debt negotiation," or "debt reduction" is a scam. If a debtor wants to use this tactic, they are far better off doing it themselves.
