Unless I am horribly mistaken, I'm afraid the attorney steered you wrong. You should follow the SOL for the state you're in and are being sued in (Iowa). I don't see that Michigan's SOL has anything to do with it, UNLESS they were suing you in a Michigan court.

The only other time I would think that would matter would be if they got a judgment against you in Michigan and then tried to get the foreign judgment enforced in Iowa. That doesn't seem to be the case here.

If you're a bona fide resident of Iowa now and when the case was filed in Iowa, I don't see how a foreign statute would apply, unless Iowa gives the plaintiff a choice of law.
