I'm really starting to wonder just how many "Sheriff Sales" really involve peoples personal property, that is TV's, stereos, computers, etc... I have been scouring the web and talking to local lawyers and I have yet to see any Sheriff Sales that weren't for large items like homes and other property or boats or cars. I do some work for one of Long Islands bigger auctioneers and he says most of his stuff comes from estate auctions, companies that go under or people unloading tons of junk to raise cash.

As JKelly says, used stuff just isn't worth that much. I mean I bought a nice recliner a couple years ago for $450 but even though its in perfect condition its not worth more than $100 now. My 36" RCA TV cost me $1200 about 5 years ago, best offer I ever get for it when I try to unload it is around $150-$200. These are BULKY items and need a couple people to haul out, where would they put them and how would they display them. Its just not feasible to handle probably 95% of the stuff you own. Even computers more than two years old are pretty much worthless.

Its possible if you were forced to tally up assets and then come up with a value you might be told that they COULD take the stuff over your exemption limits , but that still leaves them with the nightmare of WHAT they could take, HOW they would get it, WHO would move it and WHERE would they store and display it for auction.

I think in the cases of judgements and bankruptcy the rules look good on paper but acting on them to take your stuff is alot more messy and many items would just be overlooked.

I wish more lawyers visited here to add to what their experiences are with Sheriff Sales so we could get an idea of what it really is like, not just what the courts claim it should be.
