I am amazed at the number of people who will cash these unexpected checks. I mean I can understand if you know who the company is and you are told you were overbilled or something, but so many people get these bizarre checks and actually go ahead and cash them.

I get checks from $1,000 to $50,000 all the time as "business loans" and other things, why they heck would anyone give me a check like that if they saw my horrible credit rating.

A neighbor of mine did that last year with a $99 check and got into some kind of trouble as it turned out to be a loan that went nuts with interest and penalties before he could do anything with the money it was supposed to be giving him.

If anyone gets any kind of oddball/unexpected check: RIP IT UP AND THROW IT OUT. You do not even have to acknowledge you got it and if someone calls to ask if you did just say no. If they persist in trying to get a check to you tell them you are not interested.
