Even in a community property State, you can not be held liable for an account you did not sign for. HOWEVER, in many States, if the account was used for "neccessaries" that is household items or medical services etc. that are considered to be a neccessary part of maintaining your family, AND if the CC company files against you and can PROVE that the charges were for those items, even if YOU didn't make the charges, then they COULD win a suit against you. Your lawyer is correct, wait and see what happens. Meanwhile, opt out and DO NOT use those cards. Be particularly careful of and CANCEL ongoing automatic charges for cable or cell phone services etc.
