I wouldn't deal with them, collection agencies, at all. See letters offered on WhyChat's website, those are great. I used one, a Cease and something (can't remember) letter and they never contacted me again. I also sent my original creditor a letter (also from Whychat)saying i would only deal with them for this debt, no collection agencies.
Since they never responded i ended up disputing it through the credit bereaus and am working on having it removed from my report. It's taken me about 6 months to get this far though. Very time consuming. Good Luck
