What, exactly, is the "lawyer" trying to collect?

A judgment?

If so, the law would set the amount of the judgment as well as the % rate that can be charged.

I think you are up against an intimidator- lots of bark- often no bite. Suggest you stop talking to him- you may say something you don't want to .

Court is expensive and time consuming.
Lawyers must respond to every piece of paper that is filed by defendant.

Court does not enforce judgment- no matter what they tell you.

You may have over estimated your business income-deduct everything you can and there might not be much profit left. Three years to file an amended tax return and change your profitablity if you overlooked business expenses.

For now, stop talking to this guy- he may have purchased the judgment for pennies on the dollar and is now trying to collect.

He seems to have lots of leeway in making a settlement- however, it could be that the client gave him a range of payoff numbers.

Good luck
