If it's from 1998, the "person/company they are representing" is NOT the original creditor and they probably paid 2 or 3 cents on the dollar for the account.

Don't believe a word you were told. Don't settle with these guys, it won't help your credit. Since they got on their high horse and demanded a mile (when they only paid for an inch), tell 'em to go whiz up a rope.
