Yes, they have to prove it. Legally you do NOT have to prove anything because the burden of proof is on the plaintiff.

HOWEVER, you need to understand that volunteering information in an effort to "prove" the SOL could be used against you as proof that you knew the debt was yours. If you simply *must* show something if pushed to the limit, then show an old credit report with the account history on it. Credit reports are not sufficient proof that the debt is yours, yet can pinpoint the SOL.
