My husband (recently separated) waited for my direct deposit to go in to our joint checking acct at Wachovia/First Union, took all the money out, then opened up another account in his name. I went to Wachovia today to open up my own, they asked me to pay the -$2.00 balance (the acct was negative because of a svc charge) on the joint acct then closed it. After doing a check so I could open my own checking acct, I was denied due to my credit; debt that was shared. When I asked why he was able to open an acct, they replied he got one because the joint acct was open when opened his. They just closed the joint acct 5 minutes prior and now would not give me one.
Lesson #1 - Don't ever get married. You do stupid things like open joint accounts.
Lesson #2 - Don't use Wachovia/First Union
