Well Debt Collector - to come here and say that we CHOSE to not pay our bills after a job loss or accident is just plain ridiculous. You seem upset that many hear generalize your industry, but you don't try to see it from a majority of consumers situation you just generalize us as deabeats. The credit industry is regulated to benefite the creditor and NOT the consumer. WHen I got sick 6 years ago - insurance would only cover 60% of my bills - I even had to pay 20% of my coverage premium!!!! The charges were a hefty 45% average of my NET pay - Add rent and utils (only essential ones - water/sewer, elec, gas, phone) and I was at 95% of my net pay per month. 3 months after getting sick I was let go by my job. I had only been there for 6 months so I didn't qualify for disability insurance with them. Luckily I thought, I had a 9 mo nest egg saved - in that time I figured I would get better and find another job....you wanna know how long that lasted? 2 MONTHS. That's it. I didn't spend it on frivilous things - I wasn't out shopping til I dropped. It got to the point were there were weeks and days were I had to choose between paying drs, buying meds, food, or paying bills.

The original creditors didn't care that I was sick and about to lose my job - i was current and a longstanding - never late customer when I initially approached them to temporarily stop interest or allow for smaller min payments like 15 dollars rather than 30 dollars per month - I was only asking for 6 months of this - not a lifetime. I didn’t have huge balances outstanding - utilization was around 40%, however I could not afford the min payments of 30, 25, 35 dollars. They wanted NOTHING to do with me UNTIL i was past due AT LEAST 90 days!!!!! You say I CHOSE to not pay?????? I was literally FORCED to not pay to get any consideration from the original creditors. Some of the creditors did help after their required time in deliquency - those are the creditors that have been paid. The ones that immediately turned the accounts over to outside collection firms AFTER they told me that I had to become deliquent have not been paid not will they ever. Sorry - but its a matter of prinicpal - they said they could help if I was deliquent, then turned their backs on me after I followed thier procedures.

I look at myself as being lucky though - I have less than 9 months when those accounts drop off my credit reports FOREVER. I don't care that you will likely say - 'that's nice, but we can collect on those debts forever' - go ahead - try - they are all out of statue - you better have ALL your ducks in a row if you try to take me to court - you better have more than some thread bear affidavit from some 'supervior' stating they have PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE that the alleged debt is MINE. YOU better be prepared to lose - an watch yourself, cause if you don't follow THE LAW, you will be paying ME for your time in court. Sorry, but you can't expect me to feel bad that you can't collect 400 dollars on a debt that was originally 180, that you purchased for 4 dollars????? I didn’t choose to not pay these debts, I was told NOT to in order to get some relief. If the can break their agreement with me, why should I be held to the same agreement?????
