Did I make a mistake arranging to pay a CA?

NCB was harrassing me & after sending them a cease and desist letter w/a copy to the FTC I got a letter from them stating "We expect you to keep the following agreement" then listing 3 payment dates and the amount of $10 per month. I spoke to them once & offered $10/mon which at the time they refused. Technically I didn't sign anything & I've only sent 1 payment but after reading all the things about paying CAs I'm wondering if I did the wrong thing. I made the payment by m/o (no way was I going to send them a check) and made it to the original creditor. I know now that by making this payment it has started the SOL all over which I wasn't thinking of at the time - just wanted to get these people from harrassing me. Credit report shows the account was a CO prior to this contact. Did I screw up? Should I stop making these payments or make them directly to the OC? What is the purpose of a CO if CAs continue to harrass you?
