It was my understanding that you had 30 days from the date of service, not the date the suit was filed, and once an answer is filed you must be notified by Plaintiff of a court hearing. Unless the court where the suit was filed is a small town one there is usually a bit of time that goes by before the case can be put on the docket for a hearing. Also, once a default judgment is obtained you have 30 days to appeal. After that I'm not sure if there's much else that can be done. I also don't believe a homestead exemption is automatic in Texas. We had to file ours.
