I did this about a month ago. Its very easy.

You call an automated machine. It asks you to enter your social security number and some other info and then I think I had to say my name or something similiar into a recording. Whole thing took a couple minutes. I opted out for life so they sent me a letter about 5 days later which was just a confirmation of what I wanted. I just had to sign it and some other trivial questions and mailed it back.
