Validation letter or discovery request

I filed my notice of appearance and answer to the lawsuit by First Resolution and it is now set for early Sept. I wanted to check what was the right way to proceed. Do I send the validation letter to both First Resolution and the attorney or do I send a request for discovery to just the attorney? Since there is more than 30 days before court, if I send the validation letter and do not get a response doesn't that mean they can't continue the suit?
