I don't know what state you are in, but they probably can sue you for breach of contract. How much they can sue you for depends on what your lease says about early termination of the lease. Your best bet would be to get a copy of renters rights from your local HUD or Housing Authority and see what it says about this. It lists all a landlord can and cannot do. It also gives you what steps to take if the landlord violates those rights and contact info to file a complaint against them. Congrads on the new home and good luck!
