In this case, "oral contracts ain't worth the paper they're written on". If you really want to settle this account, hire a lawyer to handle the details for you = or else they will just sell the balance to someone else for a few pennies for them and more misery for you. Sounds as if this debt may be past sol. When did you last pay the original creditor and what state?
