I don't know what the lawyer told you but it is highly unlikely that you will lose any of your personal belongings. You MUST fill out the exemptions form and return it to the court. That is the only way your things will be protected.

What state are you in ??
We have to know this in order to find out what your exemptions are.

Do you own a home ?
How is it deeded ?

How much equity do you have in it ? (how much its worth minus the amount of any mortgages)

Do you have a car and is it financed ?

Is the judgment against just one of you or both of you ?

If you can give us the answers, we can hopefully calm your fears a bit.
