Stopping payment on a check in TX is illegal, and I think it is listed as theft.

From my understanding, it is illegal to stop payment on a check, without first notifying the payee, and getting their approval. It is also illegal if you give someone a check knowing it will bounce, but you do not tell them.

I stopped payment to an AC guy that ripped me off, and went through a whole boatload of legal crap and paperwork to get my butt out of it. I won in the end, but it was still a hassle.
(I'd do it again though - Screw the stupid law - It's MY money!).

Just thought I'd let you know that it is truly illegal. Call your local PD, or go look at the Courthouse library if you'd like to confirm.
