answering summons

I live in Alabama and have received a complaint with a summons attached. I need to answer the summons within 30 days. This account was charged off several months ago and I am sure it has been bought. Do I need to ask for validation? I once got a letter from Hanna and Associates on this account but have not heard anything in about 9 months from anyone concerning this account. It was with Bank of America. It is within the SOL. Of course I will not admit to anything.
