Any criminal liability for not paying credit cards?

I have a few credit cards that I can't pay off due to losing my job. I feel so low. I have always paid my bills on time and feel very ashamed of myself. I don't blame anyone (CA's, credit card companies, etc.).

Still, is there any criminal liability for not paying a credit card bill off? What is the worst that can happen to me besides having bad credit for the next decade?

Assuming I don't file for bankruptcy, What is the longest this mess will be on my credit history? What about after that? What will be on my credit history?
