validation letter

What should be the format of a request for validation letter that is to be sent to an attorney? Is there an example on this website or anywhere on the web? Also, if I send a validation letter to the attorney that is working for a collection agency (cacv of colorado, namely), what sources will they use to validate the debt?
How can I trust those sources?

These may be dumb questions, but I would appreciate any help. I got a letter from an attorney claiming that he is trying to collect debt owed by me to cacv (through an expired fleet card). I do not owe this debt and I would like to be able to show this. If a validation request letter would work in this case, it would be great. But I am not sure if the validation process itself is trustworthy.

Thanks!
