I did nothing when I stopped using the card. My stupidity, I should have cancelled the card.

If someone else had used the card, doesn't the collection agency or the lawyer working for them need to provide proof that I myself used the card and own the debt, if I send them a request for validation? Don't they need to provide receipts signed by me or can they get away with a statement showing that my card was used for the purchase of something at some date?
