A letter of appearance is a court form that you fill out and file with the court acknowledging receipt of the summons. It will prevent the plaintiff from winning their case by default if you file the form in the timeframe listed on your summons, and if you appear in court on the date given to you.

Call your courthouse and ask the clerks where you can find the form. Sometimes they are downloadable from online, but usually you have to go to the courthouse to get the proper form.
