It could very well be ID theft of the address and phone #, but we've checked and there's nothing on either of our credit reports to explain this CA.

However, it's interesting to note that the last name is a spelling variation/corruption of DH's ex-wife's maiden name. We suspect it could be an attempt on her part to deflect a debt collection action against her, but have nothing to go on other than a hunch. She denies it, of course. After holding the unopened letter up to the light, I found that GMF is claiming the original creditor is North Star Acquisitions. Obviously they are at the very least a tertiary CA.

However, regardless of *whose* scam this is (CA or ex-wife), I think it would be pretty stupid of us to give them a bona fide name to work with. DH has no delinquencies in his name since his ex refinanced the old mortgage. Sending the CA a response in the form of a Cease and Desist or validation letter seems unwise.

On the other hand, seeing that their messages have been thinly veiled threats that they "have to make a decision soon" about the account, what do you think would be the proper way to handle this if a summons arrives with this person's name on it? If MCM's tactics are any indication of how CA's do things, the process server will simply leave the summons on the doorstep or claim that they've obtained proper service whether they did or not.

By the way, I've checked and GMF is licensed in our state and in Minnesota (where they're located). It would be easy to file a complaint, but what would be the basis of the complaint if we *don't* write them or talk to them to let them know that they have been contacting the wrong party? Seems like one of those "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situations. :-)
