Dunstone Financial Is this a violation- what can I do

I had a providian account that Charged off in 4/01, the account is now being held by a Dunstone Financial. They've had this information on all 3 of my reports since 9/03. I am in California. they never contacted me or sent a letter until I started to clean up my credit. they left a phone message for me at work yesterday. I ignored it. Put an inquiry on my credit report Tuesday, Then today, they faxed a letter to a person in my payroll department asking for my date of hire, job title, employment status, salary, my signature and the company name and address. They never mentioned that this was an attempt to collect a dept. The fax says they are trying to verify my employment, but I think it's something else. does anyone have any thoughts. Today is not my day
