collections writting for PAID cc of 15 years ago! HELP

I received this collection agency notice for an amount of money for a Credit card I had back in the 80's, that I know was paid off!!!!!
I called before writing within the 30 days (what a mistake) to dispute and got some rude and one sided people. I explained that i paid it off.. and all they said "no you didn't" to "You should pay your bills'!
I haven't in all these years heard from anyone about money due untill now 2004 over 15 years since i had this card from a bank i only used once.
Can there be a mistake! i mean in my memory there has to be .. cause i know I paid but I don't have proof!, it's so damn long ago!!!!
What do I do and what can they do?
