7 year limit

Can anyone clarify the seven year limit for me? Do old accounts with no activity fall off automatically after 7 years or do you have to request they are removed. Also I had always understood the 7 years started from the date of the last activity not the last payment. Which is correct? I am trying to clean up my credit from stupid college days and am wondering how much longer some of my paid chargeoffs will be on my credit report. When they fall off does your credit automatically improve?
