Send them a validation letter. They need to PROVE that you owe it. I would also consider typing up what you just told us. That you specifically asked certain questions and what the answer was. I would also file a complaint with the Attorney General and heck the BBB as well. Just to make sure they never try to return to town. I would dispute it if it's on my credit.
