You have a couple of choices. Either get an attorney to see if you can get the judgment vacated on the grounds that you were never given notice (which also may require that you have a defense that would have allowed you to prevail if you had shown up), or get an attorney who can assist you in making payment arrangements.

Then have that same attorney file suit against your "friend" to see if you can recover your money.

By the way, paying a judgment will not help your credit report all that much. A tiny bit, perhaps, but not nearly as much as you might think. The damage has already been done, unfortunately. It will just show up as a "paid" judgment on your credit report.
