I have never heard from anyone who has used so-called "debt counseling," who didn't end up in a worse mess than they were in before they started.

If you want the creditors to give you an even shake, then get an attorney to represent you. They will work with them before they'll work with you alone, probably because they know that your attorney may advise you to file bankruptcy if they don't play fairly.
