I owed $600.00 dollars to Discover Card and haven't made a payment on it in 2 years. Today I recieve a call from a lawyer who now says I owe Discover $4004.45. I tried to talk with him about the amount and orally told him I thought I might be able to pay $200 a month toward the debt, which he orally agreed with over the phone. About a hour later I recieve another call from another lawyer who said he was a partner in the firm with the laywer I had spoke to the hour before and this laywer tells me in no way can they accept $200 dollars a month on the debt and said that $1,750.00 would be needed NOW instead of the $200,and wanted me to agree to the amount. I refused telling him that I could only pay that amount. He told me that legal action will be taken if I don't pay the amount he wants me to pay. He also told me that he would have my wages garished if I didn't do this.I can lose my job if they start calling me at my work place and then what would this accomplish? I want to pay,but what should I do? I haven't signed anything agreeing to pay either amounts. I don't own anything of value except a old 1991 car and I need that to work to pay this debt. I do have a checking account, but I only use that so my check can be direct deposit and I pay bills out of that when I get paid every two weeks. Any advice on what to do?
