Is there a statute of limitations on collecting OLD c/c debt?

I just received a call from someone claiming to have bought an old (late '80's) Discover card debt from someone else. They are wanting over $4,000 now to pay off, or offering me a "settlement". I don't even remember having a Discover card, let alone using one. I asked them for proof, which they are unwilling (or unable) to provide. Just how far back can someone go to collect unsecured c/c debt? (even if it is legitimate)
