first of all the collection agency has to have an amount that you owe, they purchased this account from the original creditor, the amount the collection agency has may be more then what you owed to the first creditor...first find out when the CA first came to have this debt what date, also nexttime you talk to them tell them you are recording them, you may have a law in NC i dont know but if you tell them upfront you are recording this call they are more likely to be on the up and up with you..also check you credit report is this collection agency on your file if it is tell them you want to pay account but want this off your file...
