DON'T DO A CHAPTER 13!!!! My husband and I went that way (since we felt obligated and wanted to pay our debt). It was a 5 year plan and they took all our money, and I mean ALL!! We both had full time jobs. I had to take on a part-time job just to pay my utilities. The bad part was that after two years my husband lost his job after the 9/11 attacks and was unble to pay his share for three months. The courts sent us a nasty letter and told us our case was dismissed, we are not protected any more and the creditors will contract us again as if we were never in a bankruptcy. They said we could re-file again in six months with all new filing fees!! We did hire a lawyer, paid him the new filing fees ($1500)but after a few months, we decided not to file for bankruptcy but try to work out plans with our creditors. After contacting the newly hired lawyer and informing him of this, he absolutely refused to refund our $1500 so we were out that money also! All of them had absolutely no mercy on us or our situation. Sometimes I think the attorneys are just as rotten at the debt collectors! The only good thing about it was that the SOL ran out on most of the credit cards and we didn't have to pay....Thank you everyone on this board who has helped up in a bad situation!
