MRS and CapOne - deal or steal?

My wife has 2 seperate charged-off CapOne cards from med school (both about 8K); one is with MRS and the other with arrow. the MRS folks have finally - after much abuse towards us - declared that if we pay $500, they will tell CapOne to put us in the hardship program, where we can start making payments towards the full debt. Now, I am aware CapOne DOES sue, and so we wish to avoid that, but is this offer a good idea, or do they have some crippling hidden plan? We have no income now, but will in 2 years (i foolishly told them so :P), so we THINK that CapOne would see the long-term advantage of working with us, but so far............
