Yes, it matters! How does the balance come up on your credit, though? Is it a charge off? Is it a collection? I would pay it just because when you go to get a mortgage, they will make you pay it off anyway, and it doesn't immediately get reported to your credit. So pay it if you can, or save until you can. Anything on your credit that you can pay-off will definitely positively affect your rating.
